Aspen Colorado Camping

Aspen Colorado is most notable for its downhill skiing in winter but Aspen Colorado is also a perfect area for camping in the summer months. With the exceptional beauty of its pine woodlands and high peaked mountains, there is no wonder why Aspen Colorado has gained a reputation of being a great Colorado camping region. A number of Aspen Colorado camping grounds can now be found for this kind of outdoor experience. The Aspen-Basalt Campground is the most well known camping site in the Aspen area. This Aspen Colorado camping site has a long reputation of being a perfect Aspen Colorado campground for any type of camper or outdoor enthusiast. Many have claimed that its environment is so splendid that any nature and outdoor adventurer will just fall in love with it.

The Aspen-Basalt Campground is nestled deep in the Colorado Rockies. It is within an easy walk to a private river front on the Gold-Medal fishing waters of the Roaring Fork River. It is close to all the major attractions of the Aspen Colorado area. In fact, right next door to the Aspen-Basalt Campground is the Cedar Brook Lake. The Elk Mountains tower over this Aspen Colorado camping site. And to top things off, Toner Creek is right there for your fishing pleasure while you're camping at this Aspen Colorado campground.

An interesting fact about the Aspen-Basalt Campground, as the most famous Aspen Colorado camping sites, is that it offers RV sites that are leveled and shaded, and most are pull-thrus for the convenience of those with big rigs. The Aspen-Basalt Campground currently has 43 RV sites that have 50 amp services, room for slide outs, and are at least 45 feet long, making them the most comfortable RV camping sites around the Aspen area.

The Aspen-Basalt Campground also has clean, top rated restrooms, a heated pool which is open all summer, a spa, a game room for the kids, a laundry, and limited groceries for sale. These are the amenities expected from a first-class Aspen Colorado camping site.

Even more exciting is that while camping at this Aspen Colorado campsite, you will also enjoy fishing. World class fishing is as close as the Roaring Fork River right behind the campground. There is also the Frying Pan River, known for its large rainbow and brown trout. This river begins in Basalt and flows from the Ruedi Reservoir, another perfect area for fishing in the Aspen area.

While on your exciting Aspen Colorado camping vacation, you can also enjoy hiking and mountain biking at the Maroon Bell Peaks, which is close as a stone's throw away from the campground. While on your hike, you will enjoy the wildflowers of the Aspen area that paint the meadows and mountains with color galore.

While the Aspen-Basalt Campground is the most famous, there are also other camping wonderlands in the Aspen Colorado region. If you prefer more primitive camping areas you'll find them at on of these campgrounds. Most of these can be found to the Southeast of Aspen on highway 82.

Five miles southeast of Aspen Colorado, on hwy 82, you can find the Difficult Campground. This camping spot has 47 campsites. Their camping season ranges from May 21st – September 30th. At an elevation of 8, 180 ft., Difficult Campground has access to both fishing and hiking. It also has vault toilets, water and trash facilities. Campsites can accept an RV trailer up to 40 ft.

Continue further on hwy 82, then a half of a mile on Lincoln Creek and you will come to the Lincoln Gulch Campground. This campground has only six secluded campsites though. The camping season ranges from June 11th – September 13th. Lincoln Gulch is located at an elevation of 9, 600 ft. It has access to fishing and hiking. It also has vault toilets, water and trash facilities. Campsites can accept an RV trailer up to 16 ft.

Lincoln Creek Campground is a bit larger camping area just down from Lincoln Gulch. It has 28 campsites. The camping season starts a few days later and extends a bit longer, ranging from June 17th – November 13th. The elevation of this Aspen Colorado campground is 9, 800 ft. It has access to fishing and hiking. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any vault toilets, water or trash facilities and trailer space is limited.

The Lost Man Campground is 14 ½ miles from Aspen. It has 10 campsites. The season season ranges from June 18th – September 13th at this 10, 500 ft camping paradise. You will find access to fishing and hiking, vault toilets, water and trash facilities. Unfortunately, trailer space is limited.

Portal Campground is another on Lincoln Creek. It has 7 campsites. It's located a bit higher in elevation at 9, 400 ft. When camping at Portal Campground you have access to both fishing and hiking. It also has vault toilets, water and trash facilities. But, trailer space is limited.

Silver Bar, Silver Queen, and Silver Bell Campgrounds are all located close together 5 miles southwest of Aspen on Maroon Creek Road. These are small camping areas with 4-6 campsites in each one. They are mainly for hikers as there is no fishing access in these campgrounds. Their season ranges from May 21st – September 30th. The elevation is around 8, 490 ft. and they all have vault toilets, water and trash facilities. Unfortunately, none accept trailers.

Weller Campground has 11 campsites and is right next to hwy 82. The camping season ranges from May 29th – September 30th and it's located at an elevation of 9, 400 ft. Here you'll have access both fishing and hiking. It also has vault toilets, water and trash facilities. Unfortunately, trailer space is limited.
